17 - 21 June, 2013

The workshop for 18 language teachers and 22 subject teachers on “Communicative approach in learning second and third languages – how to teach learners to understand and speak” and “Content and language integrated learning” was held at “Nazarbayev Intellectual School of Сhemistry and Biology” and at “Nazarbayev Intellectual School of Physics and Mathematics” in Syhmkent city on June 17-21, 2013.  This workshop was conducted by international consultant, emeritus professor of California State University, Alan Crawford.

During the workshop, the teachers were introduced to Stephen Krashen`s language acquisition hypothesis, activity differentiation approach according to learner’s language proficiency level both, for language and non-language subjects, and critical thinking skills development strategies.

The teachers were mostly interested in Jim Cummin’s framework which describes how to develop/transform learner’s language skills from spoken (conversational) language level up to the level of academic language acquisition.

The specificity of this workshop is that it brought language and non-language teachers together so they could plan the lessons collaboratively. During the workshop the language teachers shared the experience of how to develop learner’s language skills at content subjects with subject teachers.

This workshop provided teachers with opportunities to ask questions on trilingual education and get answers from Alan Crawford as well as to deliver/present collaboratively developed lessons.

The teachers’ feedback on the workshop was positive. They have also noticed the relevance of the workshop and the trainer’s professionalism.
